I recently tried falafel for the first time, and I as soon as I finished my meal, I was excited to try and make some at home. Falafel is seasoned, mashed chickpeas, formed into balls or patties. Traditionally they are fried in oil, however, I opted to make my falafel oil-free, and bake mine instead.
These breaded chickpea falafel’s would make a great appetizer served with tahini sauce, or just enjoy a few over rice or in a pita full of veggies. Anyway you decide to eat them, they are delicious!
Here is The Home Baked Vegan’s recipe for Baked Falafel:
Ingredients:
2 Cups Cooked Chickpeas
2 tsp Garlic Powder
2 tsp Ground Cumin
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Pepper
1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika
1/2 tsp Turmeric
2 Tbsp Flour
2 Tbsp Corn Starch
1/4 Cup Water
1 Cup Bread Crumbs
Method:
In a food processor, pulse together chickpeas, garlic powder, cumin, salt, pepper, paprika, and turmeric.
Form the processed chickpeas into 18 balls or patties, and set aside.
In a small bowl, mix together flour, corn starch and water until smooth.
Place bread crumbs in another small bowl.
Coat each chickpea ball/patty in the batter, then roll in the bread crumbs until coated.
Place on a baking sheet.
Bake at 350′ for 15 minutes, then flip, and bake for another 15 minutes.
Enjoy hot or cool, on rice, pita, or on their own.
