Candied Oranges

Candied Oranges

Making candied oranges might seem like a daunting task, but it really doesn’t need to be complicated. This recipe for candied orange slices is super easy, and just takes a little patience (and no need for a candy thermometer). Grab a good book, a cup of tea, and sit by the stove while your oranges simmer and before you know it, you’ll be munching on sweet candied oranges. This recipe uses sliced oranges, but you could also follow the same instructions with just the peels as well in order to make candied orange peels. I used clementine oranges this time around, as I needed small slices to place on top of the orange squares that I was making. Whatever sized oranges you decide to use, I recommend organic oranges if possible, and at the very least: a very thorough washing prior to slicing them.

2 – 3 small oranges

1 Cup Sugar

1/2 Cup Water

Thoroughly wash the oranges, then thinly slice them no more than 1/4″ thick. In a small saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then reduce to low-medium heat and bring to a simmer. Add the orange slices and simmer for 60 minutes. Keep an eye on the pot while it cooks to make sure the sugar hasn’t crystalized and syrup doesn’t burn to the bottom of the pan. After an hour – once all the syrup has thickened and there is a small amount of syrup in the pan – remove the orange slices from the syrup, and lay them flat on a sheet of parchment paper. Let cool overnight or at least for 2 hours.

Yield: 2-3 Oranges (approximately 18 slices)
